There are so many different reel mower models available that it can be difficult to pick out the best. Well, the truth is that there is not a single reel mower that can be called the “best” since each mower has their own strengths and weaknesses.
I have picked out three push reel mowers that are all great, but would fit different sized lawns. They all three are very capable when it comes to handling different types of grass. I have also looked at the building quality, how well it mows and of course the price.
Great States 415-16SK1
The first reel mower I would like to recommend is the Great States 415-16SK1. It is a good old reel mower with a design that has been tested for decades. This mower fits best in a small yard due to its 16” swath.
The 10 inch wheels with bell bearings make the mower easy to push and maneuver around objects. The wheels even run smoothly over humps and bumps in your lawn. The reel has 5 helical heat treated blades which cut fairly tall grass with ease. You can also adjust the cutting height easily from ½ inch to 2 ¾ inches.
Overall, the Great States 415-16 reel mower is both sturdy and well-built. If you think a 16” swath is too big you should check out the Great States 204-14 reel mower.
Fiskars 6201 StaySharp Max
This is maybe the most advanced push reel mower I have come across. It is also designed completely different from the classic reel mower. The main wheels are placed behind the 18” reel which makes the reel able to cut the full width of the mower. No need to come back with the string trimmer!
Another thing that is different is that it throws the clippings forward instead of backwards. This makes the clippings being cut and chopped twice which makes finer mulch. You can buy a grass catcher if you would rather dump the clippings in the compost bin, but there is not necessary with this mower.
The Fiskars 6201 has also something called InerialDrive that makes it easier to push and increase the cutting power. You can of course adjust the cutting height on this mower which ranges from 1” to 4”.
If you have a small or medium sized lawn and want the best push lawn mower available this is the mower you are looking for. Unfortunately it is also one of the most expensive reel mowers.
Scotts 2000 Classic
The Scotts 2000 is a proper classic reel lawn mower with a 20” swath makes this the biggest of the three. The wide cutting width allows you to mow your lawn faster by cutting down on passes you have to make. The mower has two large 10” front wheels and a pair of 6” rear wheels that allows it to ride smoothly over an uneven lawn and easily maneuver around any obstacles.
What really make me like this mower is how well it cut grass. I have managed to mow my lawn with grass up to 6” with ease, but if the grass is any taller than this you probably have to make multiple passes to get all grass straws cut. You can also adjust the cutting height by simply pushing the lever in and slide it to one of the 9 different slots that adjust the height from 1” to 3”.
As long as you sharpen the blades and give it some lubricant every season or so the Scotts 2000 will last for decades. A truly great product that fits medium sized yards.
