Black & Decker CM1836 review
It was not an option for me to buy another gas powered lawn mower after my old one died. I was tired of the spring tune-ups and regular maintenance throughout the summer to keep the mower working. I ended up buying a cordless lawn mower since the thought of dragging an electrical cord behind me while mowing the lawn wasn’t very tempting.
After I had researched various cordless lawn mowers I had found two favorites, both from Black & Decker. I had a hard time choosing which one to go for, either the CM1836 or the slightly larger and more expensive CM1936. I actually bought the Black & Decker CM1936 due to the removable battery.
I am writing this review of the Black & Decker CM1836 to hopefully make your choice easier if you struggle with making up your mind, as I did. I have now tried both mowers and feel therefore I know enough to write a review about the CM1836 even though I don’t own it.
You can read my Black & Decker CM1936 review here.
Differences between the CM1836 and CM1936
The main difference between the two is that the CM1936 has a removable battery pack. This was the reason why I went for the larger CM1936. I wasn’t sure if a battery pack could manage to mow my lawn without recharging and I therefore wanted the ability to have an extra battery pack. Well, both the CM1836 and the CM1936 had no problem with mowing my lawn in one go and I see now that I could probably have saved the extra fifty bucks for the CM1936.
The 18 inch cutting width of the Black & Decker CM1836 is one inch less and weighs a bit less than the CM1936. Both mowers work great and are easy to push if your yard is relatively flat, but if your yard is hilly I would recommend a self-propelled mower. Pushing 64lbs up a hill several times can be tiring. The weight also affects the maneuverability and the 7- and 8-inch wheels don’t make it any better.
Both mowers are made of plastic which makes them look cheap, but the plastic is both strong and sturdy. My CM1936 is holding up well without any fading of the color even though it is stored in a place where it is exposed most of the day.
The CM1836 comes with an extra cutting blade which the CM1936 doesn’t for some reason.
The Black & Decker comes fully assembled in the box; you just need to fold out the handle. You can fold and unfold the handle without any tools which is great if you don’t have that much free storage space available. Remember that you need to store the mower relatively close to an electric socket to be able to recharge it.
You can adjust the height of the handle to fit your height. The handlebar is covered with soft non-slip rubber for a better and more comfortable grip.
The battery life depends on the thickness and the length of the grass, but I have used both the CM1836 and CM1936 on tall grass on a lawn close to 1/3 of an acre without running out of power. Both have a 36 volt battery pack which takes about 12 hours to fully recharge with the Energy Star rated charger.
The CM1836 is not as powerful as a gas powered mower but I have mowed fairly thick and tall grass without problems. For the tougher areas you might have to slow down your pace or make multiple passes. One thing I miss is a battery level indicator so I can know how much power is left at any time.
The battery can last up to 10 years if it is treated right. The instruction manual says to keep the mower connected to the charger when you are not using the mower. This can be an issue during the winter season if you don’t have electrical power in your shed or garage. With the CM1936 you can at least bring the battery inside which is an advantage.
Bagging or mulching
Both mowers have a mulching and bagging capability which works perfectly. You can also buy a side discharge chute separately if you prefer that.
The rear bag is not large, but works well without clogging up. The mulching function is great; the clippings are chopped up to small pieces and disappear into the lawn quickly. The rubber flap hanging down at the back of the mower helps the clippings to settle on the lawn and prevents your shoes getting full of grass clippings.
Adjusting cutting height
The cutting height is easily adjusted by pulling a single lever located on the rear left wheel. This lever adjusts the height on all wheels simultaneously and is done in a few seconds. The height can be adjusted from 1 ½ to 3 ½ inches.
- Easy to start.
- No need to drag an electrical cord behind you or regular maintenance.
- Battery is not removable.
