Earthwise 50214 review
The Earthwise 50214 is a small electric lawn mower that is light and maneuverable. In my small yard where larger mowers would be too hard to maneuver this little Earthwise mower fits perfectly.
The double layered deck is made of light, but still stiff and durable plastic. The front wheels are 5 ½ inches while the rear wheels are a bit larger with its 6 ½ inches. The wheels are alright sized, but the mower would have been easier to push and maneuver with slightly larger wheels.
The assembly is very easy, you just need to put together and attach the handle. That’s it! I was ready to start mowing my lawn in less than 10 minutes.
The handle can be adjusted so it will fit everyone, from small to tall persons. When you are done mowing, the handlebar can be collapsed in two pieces and placed on top of the mower. The mower isn’t more than approximately 30x50x20 inches when the handlebar is collapsed.
The cutting height can be adjusted on all four wheels with a single lever. You can literally change the height in just 3 seconds. The lever fits neatly into the slots which set the height from 1 ½” and all the way up to 4”. This high cutting height makes it able to handle overgrown lawns as well, but beware that it would be a lot harder to push. This is why I wanted larger wheels on this mower.
The Earthwise 50214 has a slightly different start and stop safety mechanism than I am used to. After using the mower a few times I actually think the start/ stop mechanism is better than the “regular” one. The mechanism is of course also child-proof.
What I think could have been better is how the electrical cord is plugged in. There is no way to fasten the electrical cord to the mower so if the cord is pulled or jerked a bit it will fall out. This is quite annoying so I have started to wrap the cord once around the handle to prevent it from falling out so easily.
The mower has an 8 amp electric motor which might not sound like a lot, but you have to remember that it has only a 14” swath. When I first got my new lawn mower the lawn was already overgrown with grass taller than 8 inches. I set the cutting height to maximum (4”) and started to mow. I was impressed how the mower performed. It only struggled a couple of times in areas where the grass was really tall and thick. A couple of days later I set the cutting height down and mowed my lawn again with ease.
I like how quiet it is, I could probably mow my lawn early in the morning or late in the evening without annoying my neighbors.
You can either discharge the clippings to the side or mulch them. Mulching is my preferred option so I have barely used the side discharge. From what I could tell from the one time I used the side discharge is that it worked alright without any issues.
Mulching works great, the clippings get chopped up to small pieces and spread even across the lawn.
Unfortunately you cannot bag the clippings with this mower.
- Cutting height up to 4”.
- Small wheels.
- Not able to bag clippings.
