Fiskars 6201 StaySharp Max review
I wanted a push reel lawn mower since I have to carry my mower up some steps from the back of my house to the front. I have a small lawn on my front porch and a larger in the backyard. I went for the Fiskars 6201 since it had received a lot of good reviews and had plenty of interesting features.
I was a bit disappointed when I figured out that the mower weighs 35lbs. That is more than the average reel lawn mower I would think. But it is still easier to carry up the stairs than my old gas lawn mower. I actually spend the same amount of time mowing my two lawns with this Fiskars 6201 as I did with the gas lawn mower. I would never have believed you if you told me I was going to be able to mow my lawn with this as fast as my old gas mower.
Assembling my new mower
The mower comes in a quite small box and needs to be assembled. The instructions are good and simple to follow. I believe I didn’t use more than 5 to 10 minutes assembling it, while I used an additional 5 minutes fiddling and adjusting the blades. It is very important to get the blades adjusted properly for the StaySharp system to work. If it is not fine-tuned some grass straws will not get cut and you end up having to make multiple passes.
The blades on the reel should not touch the fixed cutting blade, but be close enough to catch the grass straws and cut them. Fiskars claim that you only need to sharpen the blades every 5 to 10 years due to this system.
Remember to fasten the reel properly afterwards because I didn’t and had to adjust the blades again after running over some pinecones and sticks a week later. The blades probably need to be adjusted once every season or at least be checked. I don’t really mind since it is fairly easy and is done in five minutes if you know what you are doing. The short maintenance is time well spend if it can keep the blades sharp for at least 5 years.
The handle was fitted with two cotter pins and could be adjusted to fit anybody. I am sure this handle will be comfortable for both the very small and the very tall. The handle design allows you to hold it in different ways, both vertically and horizontally, and it has a soft comfortable plastic grip.
It takes literally 3 seconds to adjust the cutting height by using the lever on the right side. The lever slips neatly into the 9 different notches which adjust the height from 1 inch to 4 inches.
The Fiskars 6201 has something they call InertiaDrive which supposedly makes it 60% easier to push than other reel mowers. It has been awhile since I last use a reel mower but I was surprised how effortlessly I could mow my lawn. This depends of course on the height of the grass and if it is wet or not. It can be a struggle to cut the grass or the weeds when it has become too tall. A solution is to mow the lawn with a 4” cutting height and take one more sweep with a small cutting height.
Fiskars also claim that the reel on this mower has twice as much cutting power to cut through high grass that would jam other reel mowers. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I am pleased with how it mows my lawn. If you walk briskly the mower will actually run smoother. The mower is fairly quiet and I can now mow my lawn early in the morning without annoying my neighbors.
Fiskars 6201 can handle the cuttings fairly well and the design throws it forward away from your feet. No more green shoes!
If you like to bag the cuttings you can buy an attachable grass catcher that fits neatly in the front of the mower. I am considering buying one myself since I think the lawn looks better when the cuttings are bagged and dumped in the compost.
The Fiskars 6201 has two main wheels and two smaller front wheels. The front wheels don’t turn which makes it a bit harder to maneuver. I need to tilt the mower back to lift the front wheels up to be able to turn.
The inset wheel design allows the 18” reel to extend across the full width of the mower. This allows me to cut close to objects and I don’t need get the last part with a trimmer. Unfortunately the front wheels runs over the grass and bends it so the blades won’t cut as well. The result is that you need to overlap an inch or two on each sweep. This is most noticeable when the grass is tall.
- Runs effortlessly and smoothly.
- Minimal maintenance.
- Front wheels are fixed, makes it harder to turn.
