Great States 415-16SK1 review
Whether your house is situated on a hill or you just have a small patch of flat land, the Great States 415-16 is a very efficient machine when it comes to cutting grass of almost any length. This mower definitely has a very sturdy overall design with 5 heat-treated blades that are extremely sharp and had absolutely no problem cutting through the grass in front of my home, even though it had grown quite long.
Upon receiving my new mower, I was glad to find out that the only assembly required was putting together the handle, which only took a few minutes. I also liked that the T handle bars were powder coated finish which prevents rust.
Mowing my lawn
I was also very pleased with the Great States 415-16 the first time I used it; I didn’t experience any major problems and I was able to get all of the mowing work done within a very reasonable amount of time. Of course, I have a fairly small patch of lawn in front of my home so I normally do not have to spend a lot of time cutting it, but this mower was especially efficient with its 16” cutting width.
Even though the grass was a bit longer than usual the mower definitely was able to handle a lot more than what I threw at it. Some patches where the lawn has a slope or were especially bumpy the mower struggled a bit to cut evenly. Not really a big issue since my previous lawn mower had the same problems with these tougher areas of my lawn.
If you like to bag your clippings, you can buy a catch bag which can be attached. Unfortunately I haven’t tested it so I can’t say much more about it.
Ball bearing wheels
One of the things that I really liked about this mower is its 10-inch ball bearing wheels. The large wheels make it very easy to push the mower around and navigate around objects, which was definitely one of the more important features I was looking for.
The Great States 415-16 has a very lightweight design that makes it easy to move to and from the garage, so you don’t have to deal with a big bulky heavy machine that is nearly impossible to push for more than ten or fifteen minutes.
These wheels look really sturdy and I can honestly say that I am very pleased with how the mower maneuvers when I am cutting the grass or just taking it back to the garage after I’m all finished.
As with the wheels, the reel with the 5 heat-treated blades are also fitted with ball bearings to make the job of pushing the mower even easier. The blades are definitely one of the most important parts of the mower, because they are responsible for actually cutting the grass. These blades had absolutely no problem slicing and dicing the long blades of grass around my home, so I didn’t have to deal with any of the frustration I normally experience with other mowers that simply cannot handle tall dense areas of grass.
The way the blades on this mower have been designed make them very resistant to rusting and other problems, so I can trust that they will last me a very long time into the future. Since they are heat-treated they will stay sharp longer which is another great benefit.
Adjustable cutting height
The cutting height can be adjusted from as low as ½” to 2 ¾” which allows you use this mower on a lot of different grass types and lengths.
Adjusting the height takes only a couple of minutes and no tools are needed either. By pulling out the pins on each side of the back rollers you can adjust the height of the reel with the series of indexed holes on the side.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Sharp heat-treated blades.
- Durable ball-bearing wheels.
- Problems cutting grass evenly on rough areas.
