GreenWorks 25112 review
The GreenWorks 25112 has the usual signature bright green color and looks like the rest, but underneath its covers it has one of the most powerful electric motor I have encountered.
I was looking for an alternative for an aging gas mower that was ready for retirement when I saw this mower in the store. After a few years with struggling with the gas engine and walking in the gas fumes I was ready for something new. The GreenWorks 25112 is lighter, quieter and easier to push than my old gas mower. However, the extension cord can be really annoying, but it takes a bit of time to get used to it.
The mower came fully assembled in the box and ready to mow in a couple of minutes. The handle was collapsed over the mower and I only needed to unfold and tighten it. The quick release levers located midway up the handle are very convenient and fast to use.
This is also a great feature especially if you have limited storage space in your garage or shed.
Cutting height adjustment
Adjusting the cutting height couldn’t have been easier. With just one lever you can change the height on all four wheels at the same time. The lever can be placed in 7 different positions ranging from 1 ¾” to 3 ¾”. I have absolutely no complains it works flawlessly.
Mowing the lawn
Before you start mowing ensure you have an extension cord that can handle the power the mower requires. The manual says a 16 gauge would suffice for 50ft. cord, 14 gauge is required for a 100ft. cord while you need a 12 gauge for a 150ft. cord. Remember the smaller the number the bigger the diameter of the cord is.
When I tried the mower for the first time the grass had time to grow quite high. I put it on the highest cutting height and the mower didn’t have any problems mulching the grass. The power this mower has feels just like my gas mower, impressive! However, when I lowered the cutting height it got bogged down on the toughest and tallest grass. I am still impressed, though.
The mower is so quiet compared to my old gas mower. Now, I can mow my lawn early in the morning and in the evening without bothering my neighbors.
I noticed that the cutting swath is not the full width of the mower. I need to overlap a bit more with the GreenWorks 25112 than my old mower. The steel deck is 21 inches, but the blade is actually 19.5 inches. I am pleased it has a steel deck which will survive any encounters with any sticks and stones I have missed and haven’t picked up.
Another thing I like about this mower is that it is very light. It weighs only about 50lbs while a normal gas mower weighs from 75lbs to 90lbs. Due to the lightweight I can now push the mower with one hand while I manage the extension cord with the other.
The 10” rear wheels and 7” front wheels also contribute to make the mower easy to push. The large wheels also make the mower ride smoothly over an uneven lawn and let you maneuver effortlessly around trees and bushes.
After mowing the lawn I checked underneath and absolutely no grass clippings stuck to the deck.
You can choose to bag the grass clippings, discharge it to the side or mulch it. The first week I tried the mulching function and was pleased with the result. However, if the grass get too thick and tall it is better to use the bag or discharge the clipping to the side.
The next week I tried the bagging and side discharge function. The side discharge chute seems to be sturdy and it is easy to attach. The clippings going out the chute is finely cut and spread evenly on the lawn.
After using the side chute for a few lengths I detached it and attached the bag. The bag picks up the clippings neatly and as far as I could see didn’t leave any behind. The bag gets full quickly and it is a chore to go all the way to my compost bin to empty it. This is one of the reasons I prefer to use the mulching function.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Simple to adjust cutting height.
- Rubber grip tears easily.
