GreenWorks 25142 review
The GreenWorks 25142 is a neat electric push lawn mower which looks great with GreenWorks’ usual lime green color. It is not a “full-sized” lawn mower and therefore suits best to be used in a small garden. The small size and lightweight makes it a good tool if you need to mow narrow areas or around obstacles. It handles great and the 6” front and 7” rear wheels make it easy to maneuver and push over an uneven lawn.
I was surprised how small the box for the lawn mower was and even more surprised to see that no assembly was necessary. All I had to do were to lift the mower out of the box and tighten the handle.
The handle can easily be unlocked and folded over the deck again for storage and transportation. The handlebar has a soft padded grip and allows you to use one hand if needed. The well-balanced handle on top of the deck is great if you need to carry the reasonable light mower, which only weighs 39lbs (about 18kgs).
The 16” cutting deck is made of composite (plastic), but it still feels sturdy. My previous lawn mower had a steel deck that started to rust so hopefully the composite deck will last longer. The only negative part I have found so far with the plastic deck is that the shroud (sides) is thicker and the mower won’t therefore manage to cut as close to obstacles.
As it is an electric motor the lawn mower starts up straight away, just remember to hold in the handlebar and push the “safety”-button.
The 10 amp motor might not sound very powerful, but you have to remember that the mower has only a 16” blade. GreenWorks 25142 manages to cut tall grass and weeds smoothly, but it struggled a bit with wet grass. The problem is that the wet grass stick to the blades, as it would on all lawn mowers, but this mower struggled a bit more I think. You can actually hear that the blades slow down and usually quiet mower starts to make more noise. It is not a big deal, just tip the mower over and rinse the wet cuttings away from the blades.
You can either use the rear bag to catch all the cuttings or use the mower for mulching. If you want to mulch you lawn remember to insert the mulch plug to get the best result.
I have only tried to mulching option once since I prefer to bag the cuttings and dump it in my compost bin. The GreenWorks 25142 barely leaves any cuttings behind, it almost works like a vacuum cleaner picking leaves as well. The mower finely chops up the grass and throws it in the far end of the bag. This ensures that it manage to fill the entire bag before you have to empty it and not clog up when it is only half full. The bag is also very easy to remove and reattach to the mower. The bag can also be taken off the steel frame and turned inside out if you need to clean it properly.
The height adjustment for this GreenWorks lawn mower is maybe the fastest and easiest I have come across. You can adjust the height by using the lever which sits on top of the mower. This lever has 5 positions which regulate the height from 5/8 inch up to 2 5/8 inches on all four wheels.
The highest cutting height is great for areas with weeds and small brush or if you need to maneuver over various obstacles and edgings. The medium settings are what I use for my lawn which gives the lawn a beautiful cut. I have never used the mower on the lowest setting (5/8”) but I guess it would be handy if you want to make a putting green or something.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Quick cutting height adjustment.
- Excellent value.
- Struggles with wet grass.
