Husqvarna 5521P Review
I have borrowed this Husqvarna 5521P from a friend of mine. We actually switched lawn mowers for a few weeks to compare the performance. My friend borrowed my Husqvarna 7021P which is basically the same lawn mower except for the engine. My 7021P has a 160cc Honda engine while the 5521P has a 140cc Briggs & Stratton engine. My Honda engine is a bit more powerful, but the lawn mower cost me about 20% more as well. After using my friends Husqvarna 5521P a couple of times I can’t really tell any difference between them. I guess it comes down to what kind of engine you want and how much you are willing to pay.
Below you can find what I think about the rest of the mower and its features.
Folding and adjustable handle
I had to transport the lawn mowers back and forth in my car since my friend and I live a couple of miles apart. The handle folds neatly over the deck which makes the mower quite compact. This is also great when you want to stow away the mower for the winter in a shed or car port.
The height of the handle can be easily adjusted to fit you. The handlebars have a soft plastic padding that makes it more comfortable to hold.
21” steel deck
The orange steel deck hides the 21 inches cutting blade and acts as the frame for the mower. The steel is quite thin which decreases the rigidity and stability of mower. I also question how durable the plastic parts underneath at the rear really are. If you are a bit careless and run over a stub I am sure these will easily break or crack.
The deck isn’t properly painted underneath which scared me a bit when I first got my 7021P. After using my 7021P the whole summer I couldn’t find any rust at the end of the season. I believe both lawn mowers have some kind of coating underneath to prevent rusting.
Huge wheels makes it ride smoothly
The Husqvarna 5521P has two large front wheels of 8 inches and two even larger rear wheels of 12 inches. The huge wheels allow the lawn mower to be pushed smoothly and effortlessly over a bumpy lawn. I love how easily I can maneuver around the trees in my yard and how close I can manage to mow to the flower beds without doing damage to my wife’s flowers. The cutting deck is almost as wide as the mower itself so I seldom need to get out my trimmer.
The cutting height can be adjusted with 5 increments, starting from 1.25 inches to 3.4 inches. Each wheel needs to be set individually which is annoying and time consuming. I personally don’t adjust the cutting height often so for me it is not a big deal. If you like to cut your grass at different length in certain areas in your yard you should maybe go for a lawn mower with an easier height adjustment system.
Bagging, side discharging and mulching
The Husqvarna 5521P let you choose between bagging the cuttings, discharging it to the side or mulching.
I have most experience with bagging the cuttings since this is what I usually do. The mower picks up almost all the cuttings and leave the lawn with an even cut. The bag fills up neatly without any clogging. Some mowers have a tendency to not throw the cuttings far enough and the bags clogs up when it is only half full. The bag is also easy to detach and empty and then reattach again.

- Large wheels with double ball bearings.
- Maneuvers and rides smoothly.
- Cuts evenly.
- Good bagging system.
- Poor quality of the deck.
- Height adjustment is a hassle.
