Scotts 2000 classic reel review
The classic reel mower has been around for decades with more or less the same simple design. They don’t require much maintenance, are environment friendly and are inexpensive compared to electric and gas lawn mowers. The Scotts 2000 is a classic reel lawn mower which I believe is one of the best.
The 20” cutting width reduces the time and effort it takes to mow the lawn. Even though it has a wide swath it is still easy to push, but I will discuss this more below.
The mower is well-built and sturdy, but is still fairly light for its size. I have no problems carrying it up the stairs between my backyard and the front lawn. It also takes up minimal storage space in my overcrowded shed.
It has four large wheels, two 10” front wheels and two 6” rear wheels, which makes it ride smoothly over uneven terrain and easy to maneuver around obstacles. The loop-style handle is wide which also improves the maneuverability.
Easy to assemble
Scotts 2000 is assembled in 30 minutes and no tools are required. It is very easy to put together. The hardest part and what I spent most of the time on was actually trying to slide the rubber handle on. Try to put some dishwasher detergent inside the rubber handle if you are finding yourself struggling, it helped me.
How it mows
I was surprised how easy the mower was to push even through thick and tall grass. I managed to cut through 6” high grass with ease, but grass or weeds much taller than this would cause problems for the mower. When the grass is too tall it will only bend and not be cut properly this results in that I have to make multiple passes.
The 5 blade reel spins really quickly which might be one of the reasons it cuts so well while ball bearings makes it effortlessly to push. The blades are heat-treated which makes them stay sharper for longer.
I like that the Scotts classic reel is so quiet. I can now mow my lawn on early mornings before the sun makes it intolerable hot without waking my neighbors.
What I have found a bit annoying is that I can’t cut closer than about 4” to an edge and therefore need to do the final touch up with a trimmer afterwards.
The clippings the mower leaves behind can be described as medium fine mulch which doesn’t have to be raked and removed.
Adjustable cutting height
The lever located by the right rear wheel controls the cutting height. Simply push in the lever in and slide it to the slot for your desired cutting height, it is literally done in a couple of seconds. The dial has 9 different slots which have the cutting heights ranging from 1” to 3” clearly marked.
- Easy to push.
- 20” cutting swath
- Minimal maintenance.
- Great value.
- I need to trim the edges after mowing.
