Black & Decker MTC220 review
When I heard about this new Black & Decker MTC220 and its corded brother MTE912, I really liked the idea. A gardening tool that can easily be converted to a string trimmer, an edger and as a lawn mower would cover almost all your gardening needs.
Almost no assembly is needed for this gardening tool. All you need to do is to attach the guard for the string with a few screws and then push the auxiliary handle into place. The assembly took me just a few minutes and couldn’t be much easier.
Automatic feeding system for the string
The B&D MTC220 looks like a normal string trimmer and behaves like one, but can simply be converted to an edger or a lawn mower. The most common way to ensure the string is at an appropriate length is to bump the trimmer into the ground when you need extra string. Since this wouldn’t work when you use this gardening tool as an edger or lawn mower, Black & Decker have fitted it with an automatic string feeding system, AFS.
The AFS ensures that the string is at the correct length all the time. I have found it to be very convenient and it works great. I have never had to stop the string trimmer to adjust the string manually myself.
The string used with this tool is the normal 0.065” (AF-100) which is sold in most stores and found easily online. I really like that the string is single fed instead of double fed (two strings cutting) since it makes it so much easier to replace an empty spool. My personal experience is that a single fed trimmer uses less string as well.
The MTC220 comes with two 20 volts lithium-ion batteries which supposedly last longer and have a longer life-span than NiCad batteries. It is a good thing that this gardening tool comes with two batteries, because each battery only last for about 20 minutes. So with the two batteries you can manage to get 40 minutes of gardening done, which should be enough if you have a small yard.
Each battery takes a bit more than 4 hours to fully re-charge. It might be worth investing in a faster charger if 40 minutes of usage is not enough.
The Swiss army knife of gardening
This gardening tool is very versatile and can be used as a lawn mower, a trimmer and an edger with only minor alterations. I will have a look at the lawn mower function first.
The Black & Decker MTC220 comes with a small plastic cutting deck that the “trimmer” can be attached to; this makes up the lawn mower.
The cutting deck attaches and detaches fairly easily from the trimmer with the quick release foot pedal. The deck is made of plastic and doesn’t seem to be of high quality. I think it is a bit flimsy, but the worst problem with it is that all the grass sticks to the deck like glue. I ended up applying non-stick spray to prevent any grass buildup. Due to the small cutting swath of 12 inches I think this multi tool fits best for small lawns.
You can adjust the cutting height in two positions. The height adjustment mechanism is spring loaded and can be adjusted from 1.6” to 2.4” on all four wheels.
The string trimmer function is better, in fact, much better. The electric motor is powerful and handled most of the toughest parts of long grass and weeds without any problems. I really love the AFS (Automatic Feed System), it works like a charm.
The handle can be adjusted to fit your height, anything from 33” to 43”. The handle position is easily changed so you can use the edger function comfortable as well.
I haven’t used the edger function much, but I like it. Rest the trimmer on the wheel while you roll it along the edge. It is easy to control and handle.
- Automatic string feeder.
- Small footprint.
- Great trimmer and edger.
- Poor mowing capability.
