Greenworks 25242 review
The Greenworks 25242 is what I say would qualify for a small to medium sized lawn mower. It has a 16” cutting deck made of plastic with the classic lime green and gray color from Greenworks. The cutting deck is 16 inches, but the blade is closer to 15 inches, but it doesn’t make much of difference.
The plastic construction is sturdy but lightweight. The mower is by far the lightest cordless lawn mower I have managed to find so far mainly due to the Lithium-Ion battery pack.
I don’t quite like that Greenworks has fitted this mower with only 6” front wheels and 7” rear wheels. The small wheels make it harder to push and especially through high grass. I have read that some people have fitted larger wheels on this mower to make it taller and make it easier to push. To me it is not a big enough problem to go through the hassle of modifying my new mower.
The handlebar can be quickly and easily folded so the mower takes minimal storage space in your shed or garage.
The Greenworks 25424 use Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) batteries which are very light compared to most other battery types. This makes the mower only weigh 38lbs (about 17kgs) which is about the same as an equal sized corded electric lawn mower. Another benefit with the Li-Ion batteries is that they have the ability to give full power until the very last drop of energy.
I can mow my 1/5 acre yard with a fully recharged battery in thick 3 to 4 inch grass without problems. If I had to measure the battery life in minutes I would probably guess it will last for at least a good 40 minutes. The battery life depends of course of the height and thickness of the grass as well if it is wet or not. Always make sure the blade is kept sharp this will also make a difference in battery life and how well it cuts the grass.
Since I don’t have an electrical socket either in my garden shed or garage it was important for me that I could remove the battery pack. This allows me to store the mower in my garden shed and recharge the battery inside. It takes about 3 hours to recharge the battery which is not too bad. Note that the battery might need to cool down before it will start to recharge if you have just used it.
Mowing my lawn
I think the Greenworks 25242 does a great job mowing my lawn, it is fairly easy to push and very maneuverable. As long as you mow your lawn at least once a week this mower is great. Mowing grass which is taller than 5” would be pushing it. The main reason for this is that the highest cutting height is only2 ¾”, but I will discuss this more below.
To summarize, the mower cuts the lawn evenly, but struggles a bit with taller grass and weeds.
Adjustable cutting height
The cutting height can be adjusted from 7/8” to 2 ¾” in 5 different positions. I only use the top position with a cutting height of 2 ¾” since the lower positions cut the grass too short. I wish the mower had a couple of extra positions with a higher cutting height for the taller summer grass.
The height adjustment is done easily and quickly with a single lever operation that sets all four wheels.
You can choose to either mulch or use the rear bag to collect the clippings. I usually mulch my lawn, but use the rear bag when the grass gets too tall.
The rear bag is well made and can hold up to 1.4 bushels. It is easily fitted and removed. Not much more to say about it really.
I think the mulching quality is excellent on this Greenworks 25242. There is minimal built-up under the round deck and the wavy blade cuts the clippings into fine pieces.
- Battery is removable.
- Good battery life.
- Highest cutting height not quite high enough.
- Small wheels.
