Sun Joe MJ401E review
The Sun Joe MJ401E is a neat little lawn mower that looks like a toy. It is lightweight and almost exclusively made of plastic. It doesn’t give a good first impression, but it is alright built with thick and sturdy plastic.
The mower has a 14” cutting width and therefore is best suited for small lawns. The wheels are quite small and flimsy and I wished they were a bit bigger and wider. Even though the wheels are small I can still easily maneuver the mower, but this is because it is so light.
The handlebars can’t be adjusted in height which is a shame since it is a bit too low for me. I don’t like that lever you need to squeeze-and-hold for the mower to work is only on the right side. This means you are limited to fiddle with the cord with your left hand only.
The assembly takes only about 10 minutes and is very easy. It is basically just to set up the handlebars with the provided screws.
The last thing was to attach the rear bag by opening up the rear flap and clip it on. The bag has a hard plastic top which makes it easy to carry and empty. But the bag is quite small and you will find yourself emptying it often.
The Sun Joe MJ401E does a great job as long the grass is kept short and under control. When I try to cut through tougher areas with thick or tall grass it struggles severely, but it manages to get through it if I take it slow. A 12 amp electric motor, as the Sun Joe has, should be powerful enough to get through 4-5 inches tall grass, but it struggles a bit.
I know this mower has received a lot of criticism on Amazon which I think is unfair. The Sun Joe MJ40E is designed to be used on a lawn that is regularly mowed and not in a garden that is out of control. If you don’t have time to mow your lawn at least once a week during the summer you should probably get a gas powered mower that can handle taller grass and weeds.
Another reason why people on Amazon are complaining about this mower is that it is bundled with an extension cord that can’t handle the 12 amp motor. The result is that the electric motor will burn out quickly. The user manual states that you need a 14 gauge extension cord for lengths under 100 feet and a 12 gauge cord if it is longer than 100 feet. Extension cords are rated in gauges which work backwards, so a smaller gauge is a thicker cord.
You can set the cutting height to three different positions with the tallest setting being 2 2/5 inches. I usually have it set on the max height and I wouldn’t go lower than the medium setting. Remember, the lawn will look better and be healthier if you only cut maximum 1/3 of the total height of the grass. This is another reason why you need to mow your lawn regularly.
To adjust the height you first need to flip the mower on its side. The wheels are connected in pairs with a metal rod/pipe and this rod is held in the slots by a spring. By pulling the rod out and place it in one of the other slots allows you to change the height of the mower. It is fairly easy and can be done on both the front and the rear wheels.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Flimsy wheels.
- Not powerful enough.
