Husqvarna 961450023 HU700H review
The Husqvarna 961450023 HU700H is a self-propelled gas mower, which makes it a great choice for yards with inclines. The rear wheel drive let the mower climb inclines effortlessly, but I will get back to that later.
The 22” cutting deck is made of steel and seems very study. It has of course the signature Husqvarna orange paint. Worth mentioning is that the deck is also powder coated underneath, which protects the deck from rust.
Something I haven’t seen before is the deck washout port that lets you hook up a garden hose to the deck. This actually works like a charm, it has never been easier to clean and get rid of grass clippings from the deck. Great thinking Husqvarna!
The lawn mower comes in a box, but the assembly is both quick and easy. The only assembly needed is to flip out the handle and tighten the bolts. Add the oil that is provided and fill it up with gas, you are then good to go. This shouldn’t take you more than maximum 10 minutes!
Before you start mowing, you might also want to adjust the handle. You can adjust the handle to 3 different position and set it to a height that is comfortable to you. Great for us tall people!
Rear wheel drive with variable speed
The Husqvarna HU700H is self-propelled with a rear wheeled drive that works great. It will climb most inclines easily without the need for you to help the mower and push it. However, the steepest slopes will require you to help the mower or the rear wheels will start to spins and damage the lawn.
Garden with steep inclines?
If you have a yard with steep inclines and demanding terrain, there is an AWD version of this lawn mower, Husqvarna HU700AWD. This version is of course a bit more expensive and I would therefore recommend you to acquire the RWD (HU700H) version if you don’t really need it.
Two hand throttles control the variable speed transmission that will make the mower move forward. By depressing the hand throttles, you can adjust the speed of the mower anything from a crawling speed to a quick pace. The maximum speed is about 3 mph, which should be sufficient for most people. However, the throttle can be a bit hard to depress and especially for people with small hands.
By letting go of the hand throttles, the variable speed transmission disengage instantly and you can pull the mower easily backwards or push it forward manually.
Even though the lawn mower is fairly heavy it is easy to maneuver thanks to the large wheels with ball bearings. The front wheels with theirs respectable 8 inches and rear wheels with 11 inches, makes this rather large mower great to maneuver around corners and objects.
Honda makes the engine, which powers everything. I have previously had good experience with Honda engines and it is not any different with this one. They are reliable, sturdy and easy to do maintenance on. It is 4-stroke engine and has 160cc with overhead valves (OHV).
The engine starts easily with just one pull even when it is cold thanks to the automatic choke and has more than enough power.
How does it mow?
Before start mowing you should set the cutting height. This is done by a single lever on the left hand side and is both easy and quick. Needless to say, the height is adjusted on all four wheels. The height can be adjusted from 1.5” and all the way up to 4”.
Mowing the lawn with this Husqvarna is fun; it handles thick and tall grass without any signs of the engine struggling or stalling. Either choose between side discharge, bag or mulch the clippings.
The mulching function works great with no signs of heaps or clumping forming after the mower. Even during the turn at the end of a row, there were no signs of heaps forming. However, if the grass are damp or wet it has a tendency to build up underneath the mower.
If you use the bag function, you will be pleased to know that the bag comes easily off and it is as simple to put it back on again. The clippings are thrown far enough into the bag to prevent clogging up prematurely. The mower does a good job picking up almost all of the clippings and leaves a neat lawn.
Discharging the clippings to the side works as expected without any issues.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Variable speed control for the RWD.
