Lawn-Boy 10732 review
The Lawn-Boy 10732 is a great mower that has an elegant green metallic deck that encloses the cutting blades. I must admit that the mower looks quite good, but the reason I was interested in this particular lawn mower where due to its gas engine. It has a Kohler 4 stroke engine (four-cycle) with about 4 horsepower, which I will talk more about it below.
The cutting width of 21 inches and the fact that it is self-propelled makes this mower a great for anything up to a medium to large sized lawns. You can adjust the cutting height so you can get anything from fine cut lawn to a lawn with lush and long grass.
The steel deck is sturdy and has the nice dark green color which all Lawn-Boy mowers have. The metallic coating doesn’t just look good, but more importantly protected the steel from rusting. Underneath the deck the surface is smooth; there is nothing that the grass can get stuck to and makes it less likely grass will cling to the deck.
I ended up with ordering the mower online since it was cheaper and I got it delivered to my door for free. I was quite amazed at how tiny the box appeared and was afraid I had to spend a lot of time to assemble it. Fortunately the assembly was done if just a few minutes. The only thing I needed to do was to assemble the steel handle and tighten two knobs as well as filling up the engine with oil.
For me, the engine is what makes this lawn mower stand out for the rest and was the main reason I bought it. The Lawn-Boy 10732 has a Kohler XT6 OHV engine which is a 4 stroke engine with 6.5 foot-pound (torque) and 144cc (volume). A four stroke engine is not that common when it comes to lawn mowers and definitely not to the same price.
There are several benefits with a four stroke engine, but the most important ones when it comes to a gas powered mower is that is has more torque, is more reliable, quieter and it will last a lot longer. It will also run much cleaner than a 2 stroke engine which needs oil mixed with the fuel.
The Lawn-Boy mower comes with a standard 2 year “No Worry” warranty and a 3 year “Tru-Start Commitment” warranty.
This “Tru-Start” warranty is really great; if the mower doesn’t start on one or two pulls they will fix the mower for free and that’s for 3 years as well! Nothing is more aggravating than a mower that won’t start, but I am confident that this mower will not let me down. It has started on first pull since the day I got it. Not many mowers I have had in the past can boost about that.
Another thing that was a decisive factor for me when acquiring this mower was that it was self-propelled. I would say my lawn is medium sized and I could have managed without a self-propelled mower. But it makes the job so much easier and especially at the part where my yard is sloping.
The mower is rear-wheel drive which I think makes it better at climbing up a slope, but unfortunately a bit harder to maneuver. With my old self-propelled front wheel drive mower I could just lift/ tilt the front wheels up when I wanted to maneuver it around a sharp corner. When you operate a rear wheel drive mower you need to disengage and engage the drive a lot more. I must say it took me a few times to get used to it, but I can maneuver and handle the mower easily now.
The handle that engages and disengages the drive works well and lets you vary the speed from a very slow pace to almost running. The mower can also be pushed in flat areas where you don’t need the self-propelled function.
The cutting height can be adjusted to a few different levels ranging from 1.25” to 3.75”. The height is adjusted by a handle for the rear wheels and another for the front wheels. The handle for the rear wheels works great, but unfortunately the front adjustment is this mowers Achilles heel.
The front adjustment has a tendency to jump out of its slot if not properly secured. I didn’t manage to secure it properly the first time and I almost ended up running over one of my front wheels that came loose.
The height adjustments handle for the front wheels needs to be bent inward a bit toward the deck to provide some tension so the knob won’t jump out of place. So make sure to double check this after any adjustments have been done.
With this mower you can choose to either mulch, side-discharge or bag your clippings.
I have not tried the side-discharge function since it didn’t order it when I bought my mower. To get this function you need to request the parts needed at the time of purchase or call Lawn-Boy afterwards. The side-discharge parts are free and shipped you if you need/ want them.
I am very pleased with the mulching capability of the Lawn-Boy 10732. The clippings are cut into fine pieces and spread evenly on my lawn. I have noticed that the cutting blade has small notches just behind the leading edge (sharp part) and the deck is domed which supposedly should make the mower better for mulching.
I have just used the rear bag a few times and the only thing I could say it works alright. The bag is easy to attach and detach from the mower, but it gets full fairly fast.
- Great engine with an even better warranty.
- Durable construction.
- Great value.
- Front wheel height adjustment is a weak point.
