American Lawn Mower 1204-14 review
This is a real classic push reel lawn mower with a design that has been tested and proved for decades. The American Lawn Mower 1204-14 is both light and maneuverable and it works great on the flat parts, on the inclines and declines of my yard.
The mower has a steel construction that feels very sturdy and 8 ½ inch wheels. The handle is zinc-plated and has comfortable plastic grips. It reminds me of when I mowed my parent’s lawn when I was young.
It took me roughly 15 minutes to assemble my new American Lawn Mower 1204-14. The assembly consists of bolting the upper part of the handle to the lower part before you fasten the complete handle to the mower itself. You need to have some basic tools to tighten the nuts and bolts, though.
How does it work
This classic push reel lawn mower suits small yards perfectly, it is light and maneuverable. The 14 inch swath is a disadvantage if you have a large open garden, but in small garden with lots of obstacles and narrow passages it is perfect. If you have a 1/3 acre or larger yard I would recommend you to get a mower with a wider cutting width.
It requires that you put some effort into it; it is after all a push reel mower. But once the mower has gained some momentum it will mow your lawn with ease. It can even cut through some small sticks and twigs, but it is not design for this and you are most likely to jam the reel.
To my disappointment this mower struggles with certain types of grass, especially thick and dense turf. If I mow my lawn twice a week it can handle the areas with the dense grass better, but it is still a hassle. The American Lawn Mower 1204-14 can at least handle cool-season grasses as bluegrass, fescue and rye very well.
A grass catcher can be bought separately if you want one.
You can adjust the cutting height from ½” to 1 ½” with three different positions. For me a 1 ½” cutting height is almost too short and I would definitely not set it any lower. If you follow the “golden rule” for lawn care of only cutting 1/3 of the grass length you need to mow your lawn at least a couple of times a week. I think my lawn would have benefited of a cutting height closer to 2 ½”.
I am not sure when you want to go as low as ½” if you don’t have personal golf course in your backyard and need to trim the putting green.
- Minimal maintenance.
- Cutting height almost too low.
- Struggles a bit with dense grass.
