Great States 204-14 review
There are a lot of different lawn mowers on the market that have the same classical look and design as the Great States 204-14, but few of them are quite as efficient. This mower offers those who are looking to buy a new lawn mower a highly economical choice that is well worth the small investment. One of the things I instantly noticed about this mower is that it has a very sturdy design and is in no way cheap or flimsy like so many other mowers on the market right now.
Good American quality
The lawn mowers from Great States are all made in the USA and I found the overall build of this mower is very sturdy and durable. The four blade alloy steel reel, steel side plates and the high impact polymer wheels with integral molded tread makes this mower definitely seem sturdy. The blades on the reel are definitely sharp and are able to get the job done, but I wouldn’t recommend it for those who have grass that is very thick and dense. You can read more about this below.
The handle bars are made of aluminum and therefore lightweight. I was impressed with how nice this mower looked and the quality of the parts it uses.
Assembly was an easy process that didn’t take me longer than about 5 minutes, so it is definitely nothing too cumbersome at all. All you need is a Phillips screwdriver.
Mowing the lawn
When I used the Great States 204-14 for the first time in my yard I was extremely happy with how well it worked. The cutting width of only 14 inches made me at first unsure to acquire this mower or not. My old lawn mower had a 16 inch cutting width and did a fairly good job in my small garden. Surprisingly I was able to cut my grass as quickly as I used to even though I probably had to do a couple of more sweeps. I also felt like it took less effort to push my new mower maybe due to the smaller cutting width. My new hand reel mower is also so light that I can easily pick it up and carry it with one hand only.
The one negative thing I can say about this mower is that it doesn’t work as well with grass that is too tall or dense. You would probably need to mow your lawn at least once a week during the summer months. The cutting height can be adjusted, but only up to 1 ½” so with grass that have grown to be 3” or so you most likely need to do a second run to cut it evenly. You might struggle a bit more with thick and dense grass as well.
If you have pine cones and twigs scattered over you lawn they will jam the reel. It can be a nuisance, but they can be quickly removed from the reel by using your foot to reverse the blade/reel. This will clear the pine cones and twigs instantly.
One truly great thing about this mower is that it is very lightweight and therefore easy to navigate and maneuver through just about any yard, provided the grass isn’t too out of control. Although the fact that this mower is fairly small in size may detract certain people, it actually makes cutting your grass that must faster and easier. I have dealt with a lot of heavy gas mowers throughout the years, and this one is definitely a refreshing change from the frustration that comes with the former.
The 8 ½” wheels have good threads that will give the mower enough traction and makes it run over uneven parts of the lawn. The Great States 204-14 is of course best suited for a relatively flat garden.
- Easy to maneuver.
- Sturdy overall design.
- Problems cutting thick or tall grass.
- Twigs and pine cones makes it prone to jam.
