DeWALT DCST920P1 review
DeWALT have a huge range of different tools that uses their 20V MAX Lithium-ion XR batteries and it is overdue that I have a closer look at their DCST920P1 cordless string trimmer. DeWALT focus mainly on the professional and top segment of the market. Therefore, it is safe to say, I expect great things from this cordless string trimmer.

My first impression is good, as I lift it up it feels light (8.5 lbs.) and well balanced. Even though the shaft is long, the electric motor at the business end doesn’t “tip” the trimmer forward. The auxiliary handle is padded and comfortable to hold. The handle can also be adjusted up and down the shaft, and rotated to fit your liking. This can easily be down by loosening 4 hex bolts.
As I mentioned above, the shaft is quite long. To be precise, it is 65 inches long in total. This fits me perfect, I am 6’2”, but it might be too long for some. It would be good if DeWALT had fitted a telescopic shaft that could be adjusted to fit a wider range of different sized people. However, I have used several string trimmers with telescopic shafts that were too short for me, so I was pleased to find one that really fits me. I can use this DeWALT DCST920P1 with a straight back and without having the feeling of leaning forward all the time.
After using it a few times, I am pleased with the quality. It seems sturdy, the straight shaft has no flex and everything is tight. There are no apparent flimsy parts.
The DeWALT DCST920P1 has a brushless motor with a patented gear drive design. The gear drive is supposed to provide more torque and keep the cutting speed up during higher loads. If this works or not, who knows! However, I care more about the brushless motor. A brushless motor will give you a longer run time due to higher efficiency. The motor will also have an increased life span, up to 3 times longer, than a motor with brushes.
The DeWALT DCST920P1 string trimmer has two different power modes, a high and a low setting. This controls the maximum rpms the string trimmer will reach with the trigger fully depressed. On the low setting, the maximum is 4600 rpms (revolutions per minutes) while on the high setting the trimmer goes all the way up to 6000 rpms.
There is also another way to control the rpms and that’s with the trigger. The trigger has a variable speed control that will let you control the speed by how much you depress it. However, the rpms will never exceed the limit for the selected power mode. The trigger has plenty of travel/ movement and manual speed control works great.
I have noticed that there is a considerable difference between the high and low power mode settings. With the low power setting the trimmer struggles a bit. I need to sweep over areas with tall grass slowly to prevent it from being overloaded or bogged down. On the positive side, when it is overloaded or bogged down, the trimmer recovers very fast.
However, on high power setting, the trimmer is much better. It actually feels like a complete different string trimmer. The trimmer will cut down dense areas of grass with thick weeds and even light brush without any problems. I am happy with the performance it delivers on the high setting, but not impressed.
It is not only a big difference in performance between the power settings, but also the battery endurance.
The string trimmer comes with a 20 voltage Lithium-ion battery with 5Ah. This will give you a run time of about 40 minutes on the low power setting. While on the higher power setting the run time is cut in half to 20 minutes. Please note, this is continuous running with heavy work.
Re-charging takes from 45 to 60 minutes with the DCB101 charger.
If you have other DeWALT tools that uses the same 20V MAX XR line batteries, you can use these batteries on your new string trimmer.
DeWALT uses the well tested bump feed system on this DCST920P1 string trimmer. I am sure the professional gardeners prefer this string feed system over the other newer automatic systems. What the weekend gardener likes best will most likely be equally spread between the options. I have nothing against the bump feed system. One of the benefits with this system is that it gives me better control over how much string I use.
The bump feed system on this trimmer works great, you only need a little tap for more string to be fed. If you tap prematurely and the string becomes too long, a metal edge will cut of the excess string to prevent damage to the guard. On lower speeds this might make the trimmer struggle a bit. I guess the metal edge won’t cut the string clean off on these low speeds and it needs a second or two to shave off the excess string.
The base with the bump-button is quite thick, a consequence of this is that I cannot trim as close to the ground as I would like. Not a big deal, but worth mentioning.
The string used is a dual 0.080” line which is stored on spools that can take about 10 feet of string.
The string trimmer is comfortable to use, it is easy to maneuver, quiet, and has almost no vibrations. The dual 0.080” line at full speed will tear through grass and weed, and send them flying. Believe me this is something you will notice; the minimal professional-styled guard deflects only a small portion of the flying debris. The professional gardener would love the good visibility and access the small guard gives, but I am sure some of the weekend gardeners, including me, would have appreciated a larger guard.
Another thing I miss with this string trimmer, is an edger function. You can NOT use this trimmer as an edger, this is clearly stated in the user manual. Most string trimmers, today, can also be used as an edger. This is a big minus for me, as a weekend gardener, I don’t want a separate tool for each task.
I have found 3 other string trimmers that could be good alternatives in the same price range as the DeWALT DCST920P1.
The Worx WG168 is the lightest and the most basic of the four, but it is still a good option. It has a 40-volt battery, but I still feel the DeWALT is a bit more powerful. I believe this is due to the DeWALT has a dual string design, compared the WG168s single line. However, it beat the DeWALT on endurance by quite a bit. This trimmer is best suited for home owners, who wants to do some trimmer around the garden.
The second is the Greenworks 21362, which is the most versatile, but also the heaviest. In many aspects the trimmer is very similar to the DeWALT, it has a brushless motor, dual 0.080” line, and bump feeding design. However, the Greenworks trimmer is a lot more versatile, it can be converted to for example a tiller, hedge trimmer, and etc with different attachments (not included). It is capable to use attachment from Ryobi, Yardworks TrimmerPlus, and more.
The last trimmer I have compared the DeWALT to is the Worx WG191. It is also a professional grade trimmer like the DeWALT. However, the DeWALT has better quality, no doubt! One thing I really like about the WG191 is that you can adjust the angel of the head. Also this feature makes it great if you want to reach underneath bushes or other obstacles. It has a variable trigger to control the trimmer speed and the string is fed by a push of a button. The WG191 has the highest voltage rating with its 56-volt Lithium-ion batteries and it is also the most powerful. There is definitively more power in this WG191 than the other three alternates.
When it comes to ranking the power of the three others, it is a close race. The second place is tie between the DeWALT DCST920P1 and the Greenworks 21362. I can’t really notice any difference in power between them. On last place, I have put the Worx WG168. It is a bit weaker than the rest, but not much.
If you want one tool that can do many jobs, you should go for the Greenworks 21362. While the DeWALT DCST920P1 is the best option if you want the professional feel and quality.

The DeWALT DCST920P1 is pricy! For the same amount, you could get a 40-volt string trimmer made by of one the competitors, which would be more versatile. I know DeWALT makes tools targeting semi-professionals and professionals, hence the higher price. The positive is that the 20-volt DeWALT can compete with some 40-volt trimmers when it comes to power.
